Why I’m not using “guru” anymore

I want to take a moment to jam on something that is important to me, something I recently learned, and how it’s impacting the work I’m doing here.

This year I’ve dived into the world of social justice, anti-racism, and being a true accomplice to BIPOC, LGBTQ+ folx, and other marginalized people. (I know I’m late, and for that I’m truly sorry.)

I’m trying really hard to decolonize, both personally and in my work, from white supremacy and a lot of the gross social conditioning that is the foundation of system racism and oppression.

This means that I am constantly questioning everything, doing loads of research, and educating myself so that I can be a responsible practitioner (and human), minimize any harm I may unintentionally cause, and restore the harm and course correct when I do mess up.

The past few weeks I’ve been learning about cultural appropriation, and I’ve done a lot of research on the origins of words, internet slang, spiritual terms, as well as spiritual tools and practices in general (I’m by no means an expert, and I’m always learning).

You may have seen a few weeks ago I introduced The Asshole Guru Oracle Deck, along with weekly digital card pulls. This is a way for me to work my sense of humor into TSC so we are all having a good time.

However, I recently learned that using the term “guru” (and potentially profiting off of it when I create the real card deck) is a form of cultural appropriation, since the word  originates from Buddhism/Hinduism practices, and I am neither.

I want to apologize for this mis-step, and I promise I will strive to do better and be better.

I’ve changed the name of the deck to The Asshole Oracle Deck, and I’ve updated the graphics on my IG stories and blog.

I think part of anti-racism and social justice work is sharing it with others, as well as the things I’m learning, because we don’t know what we don’t know.

And, let’s be real, as much as we may have pure intentions, at the end of the day, it’s impact–not intentions–that matter.

Weekly Wisdom: Patience & Planning

It is a time to practice patience and release control.

It is time to stop and reflect on what is in front of you before moving forward.

Plan from a place of ease and flow, not rush and force.

Ask yourself:

What is working well for me?

What is not working well for me?

Where am I feeling resistance?

Where am I feeling ease?

Where do I need to let go of my expectations?

What do I most want to move toward?

How will I handle difficult decisions or situations as I move forward?

It is always better to be proactive than reactive, so…

Stop, reflect, plan, THEN proceed.

Weekly Wisdom: Destiny

This is a time of good luck and fortune.

It is a time of change, success, and growth.

What you have sowed, you will soon reap.

Allow yourself to fully receive what is coming to you now – you’ve earned it.

Allow yourself to believe in your own worth and value.

You deserve happiness.

You deserve abundance.

You deserve the most sacred dream that is on your heart.

Allow yourself to dwell in possibilities and take intentional action from that sacred, pure space.

Ohhh this one gave me the feeeels. The energy of this pull is so pure and affirming. Let yourself sit in that space for a moment: you are so loved and deserve allll the desires of your heart.

Rest & Rejuvenate

By now, I think it’s fair to say that 2020 has been a challenging year…one (read: me) might even say 2020 has been a dumpster fire. And they would be correct. It’s been a year filled with a lot of uncertainty, fear, and divisiveness. A year filled with a lot of loss and grief and hard work to do and organize. 2020, and life in general, can just be a lot sometimes.

This is why it’s so important to rest and rejuvenate.

We’ve been conditioned to be hyperproductive, to always be working on the next to do, hustling and grinding. Raise your hand if you ever find yourself wanting nothing more than to just do nothing, just be and relax and take some time and space, and then immediately feel guilty and ashamed that you’re “not doing anything useful or productive.”

::raises hand for all eternity::

It’s not healthy for us to always do, do do, grind, grind, grind, work, work, work. It leads to stress, anxiety, overwhelm, and burnout. It leads to dis-ease within the body, which can show up as various physical ailments (liiike totally speaking from experience here – thanks, sciatica!).

So, take some time each and every day to just rest and rejuvenate. Don’t overcomplicate this. Make it easy and something you look forward to rather than another to do you need to check off your list. Here’s a super simple practice to help:

Rest & Rejuvenate Practice

Step 1: 4x4x6 breathing.

Find a comfortable, quiet place to sit, where you won’t be interrupted. Close your eyes and inhale for a count of 4, hold for a count of 4, and exhale for a count of 6. Repeat 3 times, for a total of 4 cycles.

Step 2: Sit in stillness & rest.

Take a few moments to just sit in stillness and rest. Allow your mind to wander, and don’t focus on any one thing. If you find this difficult, focus on your (normal) breathing pattern. If you notice any tension in your body, focus your breath there.

Step 3: Fill yourself up.

Think of something that makes you happy, something that makes you feel expansive and light. Now picture that happy, expansive feeling as a white-gold light. Imagine that light slowly filling you up, starting at the crown of your head, and slowly trickling through the rest of your body. Once the light reaches your feet, focus on your entire being, now filled with love and light and vibrating high.

Channeled Message: Express Yourself

Allow yourself to be all that you are.

Use the voice that was gifted to you in this lifetime.

Do not say (or not say) what you think others want to hear, say what needs to be said from the deepest, wisest part of your soul.

And it is not just in speaking that you can express yourself. You can do it through:

There are many facets to your being, many facets to your soul. Allow yourself to peel back the layers and shine a light on what is calling to your heart the most.

TLDR: Express yo’self, you unique snowflake, you!

Weekly Wisdom: 9 of Fire

This card appears when you’re experiencing a time of uncertainty.

Rather than forging ahead with force (vs. flow), proceed with caution, and perhaps even reevaluate the options before you before taking action.

Sometimes uncertainty is the Universe’s way of trying to get your attention so that you’ll slow down and really take inventory of what is unfolding around you, as well as the best way to proceed.

So, stop, ground into your circumstances, and take the time and space to really think–and feel–into what is right before you act.

TLDR: Stop rushing and forcing. Slow your roll, take a beat, and think before you do kthxbai.

Spirit right now:

Why so serious?

I have a confession…

Some of you already know this, but HOLY CRAP have I been struggling with The Sacred Channel!

I decided to take a break from social media in general the past few months, the noise and negativity was getting to be too much, and I was already struggling with my well-being and mental health after this dumpster fire of a year.

But when it came to my work here, I’ve been feeling so disconnected. Something hasn’t been clicking, and I was toying with the idea of just scrapping this altogether, because usually, for me, a sign that something isn’t in alignment is when it feels SUPER HARD ALL THE TIME.

Liiike, who wants to live like that? Create like that? Be from that space? Not me!

Luckily, I have some pretty epic BFFs and soul sisters, and I was confiding in one about my struggle with TSC and she made me realize what TSC was missing…

Sacred and spirituality doesn’t need to mean SERIOUS 24/7. Those of you who know me IRL know that I am the least serious person ever. I’m silly and outrageous and an asshole and a fangirl and a nerd.

The reason TSC has felt so hard is because I was taking it waaaaay too seriously and haven’t allowed myself to really seep into this work.

Because my spiritual journey hasn’t been SERIOUS AF and super reverent and like holy and shit. Half the time, my spirit guides are coming at me like that meme with Batman slapping Robin up the side of the head.

There’s always been humor in spirit for me, because that’s just who I am.

So! All of this long windedness to say that you’ll be noticing some changes here, as I realign and start Paming up this joint. There will be memes and GIFs and slang and geekery. There will be f-bombs and dumb jokes and sacred silliness.

Cause that’s just who I am.

Remember that story about the wolf and the indigenous old man from months ago? About the mosaic? Welp, I am a mosaic, and it’s allll the little pieces of who I am–not just spirituality, but my fangirling and sense of humor and love of GIFs–that make up the work of art that is me.

TLDR: Sorry for taking this so seriously. Also sorry not sorry for the soon to be abundance of cursing, memes, and witchy ridiculousness.

Channeled Message: Go inward.

There is much unrest around you now.

How easily you could get caught up in it all, spend every waking moment of your time anxious of the unknown, mourn what you have lost or what you cannot have, afraid of what is to come.

Do not be swept away on this tidal wave of fear.

You must ground into your core, the very essence of your soul.

Cultivate the safety that you seek within.

You cannot control others, nor the world around you. You can only control yourself, your own being, and how you react to the external world.

Allow yourself moments of stillness to go inward. Access the innate safety and trust that exists deep within you, deep within your body and soul.

There will be times to go outward, to use your voice, to amplify the voices of others, to take action, to resist, to love, and to inspire.

And there are times when it is okay to seek solace and safety within yourself. Doing so is an act of deep self-love.

Show up for the fight that calls to your heart, but remember to take breaks to rest, go inward, and nourish yourself.

Weekly Wisdom: Forge, Don’t Follow

It’s time for you to forge a new path and be the leader you wish you had.

Sometimes you must create the path as you go, especially when you are aligned with your own unique journey vs. allowing another to lead you on theirs.

Stop waiting for someone else to lead you, and instead lead yourself.

“Unique” is not just a fluff word.

There is literally no one else on this planet who has your unique combination of skills, gifts, and lived experience. There is no other who thinks like you, speaks like you, and shows up like you.

Stop waiting for permission, and forge ahead.

Take that first step on your path, and in doing so, you will make it easier for others to do the same.

November Wisdom: Movement, Choices, Decisions

This is a time for movement, of significant change. Choices must be made.

You may feel a sense of overwhelm – there is already so much before you, so much to do, but you can handle it if you stay flexible yet focused.

Follow the flow and do not force.

Also remember that when it comes to change and making decisions, you don’t need to do it alone. Turn to those you trust, those you know who have your best interest at heart always.

The most important thing to remember right now is to avoid stagnancy. You must move – move through, move on, move forward.
